Poněkud výjimečné místo ve filmové tvorbě amerického spisovatele, herce, scenáristy a režiséra Woodyho Allena zaujímá snímek Zelig. Hlavním hrdinou je jistý Leonard Zelig, jehož životní příběh údajně ve 30. a 40. letech dvacátého století vzrušoval celou severní Ameriku. Je to v podstatě nešťastná osobnost, jejíž hlavní touhou bylo zařadit se, patřit do lidské společnosti. Tato touha se projevuje postupně zcela jedinečným způsobem, nazvaným chameleonství. Leonard Zelig je totiž ve snaze sounáležet, schopen potlačit svoji identitu a přijmout na sebe podobu jiných lidí. Již v řadě předchozích titulů Woody Allen prokázal širokou mnohotvárnost a plasticitu své představivosti a tvůrčí fantazie, tentokrát příběh smyšlené postavy vytváří s jakýmsi důrazem na věcnost a historickou objektivitu. Tomuto záměru přitom působivě napomáhají fiktivní archivní záběry a výpovědi těch, kteří se se Zeligem někdy setkali: psychiatrů, filozofů, celebrit té doby.
