V podzemní věznici hradu zlé čarodějnice Bavmordy porodí jedna ze zajatkyň dítě, které má podle dávného proroctví ukončit její vládu a zničit ji. Děťátko Elloru Danen ale zachrání před Bavmordinou nenávistí porodní bába, která ho jen těsně před dopadením krvelačnou psí smečkou položí v košíku na vodu. Řeka dítě odnese do blízkosti trpasličí vesnice, kde je najde trpaslík Willlow. Když však psi napadnou vesnici, Willow je vybrán, aby dítě odnesl zpátky lidem, protože to je ostatně jejich problém. Cestou potkává žoldnéřského bojovníka Madmartigana, který mu, nejdříve neochotně, pomůže. A tak Willow "skrček sotva mámě pod bradu" podnikne těžkou a nebezpečnou cestu a naplní tak proroctví i svůj osud. A možná se někde cestou stane velkým kouzelníkem...
