Nathanaelovi bude brzo sedm, ale pořád ještě neumí číst. Když mu jeho teta Eleanor odkáže svou knihovnu, která má stovky knih, je Nathanael velmi zklamaný. Každý z příběhů ale přinese úžasné tajemství: když padne noc, postavičky – roztomilá Alenka, Zlá víla, Kapitán Hook – vystupují z knížek. Musí varovat Nathanaela, že jsou ve velkém nebezpečí a hrozí jim, že navždy zmizí. Aby zachránil své malé přátele a jejich příběhy, vydává se Nathanael, zmenšený Zlou vílou na jejich velikost, za dobrodružstvím.
