The theatre company to which Shigeki Kaji (Mikuni), Tosuke Satomura (Yamauchi), Nanako Kasuga (Otowa) and the others belong went into financial ruin, and they were taken on the road by their leader Hayashi (Shimizu Gen). However, the company fails to make any headway, and Nanako is finally advised by the head to strip. Outraged, the three returned to Tokyo and worked as extras and film carriers to make ends meet. One day, Shigeki and Tōsuke meet Kitano (Shimojo Masami), a member of the studio's publicity department, who encourages Shigeki to apply for an acting exam. Shigeki catches the eye of the producer and is accepted into the film industry. He then joins forces with veteran actress Mayumi Kyogoku (Takasugi), and together they become stars.
